Internationalization and Innovation in Higher Education:

Tashkent and the University of Westminster

Research into the internationalization of higher education is gathering pace rapidly, and the impact of internationalization on higher education practice and policy is the focus of our upcoming international conference. The conference brings together a mix of policy practitioners and academics to explore issues around innovation and internationalization in a number of key areas, including international partnerships, international student mobility and research collaborations around the globe. Born out of the longstanding partnership between the University of Westminster and Westminster International University in Tashkent, the conference seeks, through the lens of internationalization, to reflect on current higher education practice in teaching, learning, research, curriculum development, assessment, leadership, governance, digitization, technology and transnational education. We welcome submissions from faculty members in all areas of higher education, from researchers and scholars and from higher education policy makers and managers, related to fields that critically explore any aspect of internationalization and innovation in higher education, particularly papers with a Central Asian and/or Silk Road focus.

The conference will be held on the campus of Westminster International University in Tashkent. Invited speakers will be provided with hotel accommodation and meals free of charge for up to three nights. Registration fees will be charged For PhD students, no fee is charged. Conference registration prices (excluding accommodation) are:

  • Central Asia residents: $50 USD
  • Non-Central Asia residents: $100 USD

This international conference is associated with the new international peer-reviewed journal, Silk Road: A Journal of Eurasian Development. This journal has been established to provide a forum for analysis of and debate about policy issues and emerging agendas in the Silk Road countries and their transregional links. Published by the University of Westminster Press, the first issue should appear around the end of 2018. A special issue of this journal will publish selected papers from this conference. 

Please submit your expression of interest in the form of a 250-300 word abstract to by April 30, 2018. Please indicate to which conference theme or themes it is relevant. Information enclosed with your abstract should include title of paper, author name(s), institutional affiliation and email address. We will respond to expressions of interest by the end of June 2018. The deadline for the submission of final copy of selected papers will be 1 December 2018
