The Arab Reform Initiative (ARI) is a leading independent think tank that promotes a home-grown agenda for democratic change and social justice in Arab countries. ARI conducts policy analysis and innovative field research, combines scholarly work and advocacy, and acts as a policy platform for emerging voices from the region.

As part of its efforts to foster and build a community of engaged researchers, ARI is currently accepting applications for Non-Resident Fellowships. ARI’s Non-Resident Fellows will act as in-house experts and will play a key role in contributing to knowledge production and development of the research community of the organization.

In return, the Non-Resident Fellows will:

• Carry out an independent research project based on original research and ideally fieldwork. This research will be submitted in the form of a long research paper upon the termination of the fellowship. If the fellow would like to propose a different format for the research findings, this can be discussed with the fellow during the selection process.
• Engage in policy debates through the publication of at least onepolicy brief or op-ed or the production of podcasts
• Convene and moderate at least two events in the form of policy dialogues and/or panel discussions on topics connected to the research project or the fellows’ topics/country of expertise.
• Participate in ARI’s knowledge production process through suggesting researchers and partners; commissioning and editing papers for ARI’s Bawader series; and working with the team to identify key issues or topics that are emerging and should be addressed.
• Participate in media and advocacy actions as relevant to the Fellow’s area of expertise.
• The Fellows are also encouraged to propose different innovative forms of knowledge production and outputs (e.g.: podcasts, interviews) related to their research and ARI’s work in general.

In return, the Non-Resident Fellows will be integrated into the ARI team and its broader ecosystem of partners which include research facilities, think tanks, policy makers and media partners. This includes becoming a part of ARI’s alumni network formed out of ARI’s previous staff and non-resident fellows who will be consulted for ARI’s specific research needs and interests. Non-Resident Fellows will benefit from training and speaking opportunities and will also receive visibility and publication in Arabic and English, and the opportunity to attend international conferences as a representative of the organization.

Non-Resident Fellows will receive a research grant of 5,000 USD. Additional funding could be made available for participating in international conferences as well as peer review tasks.

Scope

The Fellowship will be for twelve months, ideally beginning 3 October 2022. The Fellowship will be dedicated to producing expertise either on a particular country (or group of countries) or on a thematic area related to ARI’s core body of work. The following countries, topics and profiles will be given a priority in the selection process:

• Countries: Algeria, Egypt, GCC countries, Palestine, Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, and Yemen.
• Topics of interest: Environmental Politics and Policymaking; Political Economy and Social Justice; Social Protection; Social Movements and Syndicates; Women’s Political Participation; Political Transitions .
• Profiles: researchers/scholars with at least three years of experience in the proposed field of research , mid-career experts, journalists, lawyers, and activists who are keen to reflect upon their experiences and the lessons learned.

Qualifications

• Minimum Master’s degree in political science, social sciences, law, public administration, or other relevant fields.
• Demonstrated expertise at either the country or thematic level. This may include prior work history, academic studies, publications record, or other.
• Fluent Arabic and proficiency in English and/or French.
• Previous experience in the policy arena is highly desirable.
• Preference will be given to those living or working in the MENA region.
