BMBF/ZOiS Scholarships for Ukrainian Scholars
Fellowship 29.01.2023The Centre for East European and International Studies (ZOiS) is awarding different scholarships for the year 2023.
We are seeking to fill the positions (m/f/div) of one senior Berlin-based fellow, one junior Berlin-based fellow and three Ukraine-based fellows
within the project Ukraine Research Network@ZOiS (UNET), funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
In response to the world’s demand to understand Ukraine, Berlin-based ZOiS is awarding up to 5 fellowships for Ukrainian scholars. The goal of the project Ukraine Research Network@ZOiS (UNET) is to stimulate research on Ukraine and to communicate it for better decision-making as well as to strengthen horizontal connections in the community of the Ukrainian scholars. We invite scholars to join our rigorous and supportive academic community as well as use our centre’s communication platforms to spread the word about Ukraine and its recent research trends to journalists, academics, policy makers and politicians.
What projects are we supporting?
ZOiS invites applications with innovative research proposals that focus on one or several of the following 5 key issues:
Disciplinary and interdisciplinary projects in Social Sciences which explore societal, political, economic, cultural and environmental consequences of the contemporary Russia-Ukraine war with particular focus on (but not limited to) the following:
- Diversity, identities and social divides
- Decentralisation and local development
- Internal and transnational migration
- Democracy and governance
- Social environmental issues
The project should include the following components:
- Empirical documenting and analysis of reality during/after the war
- Practical implications for decision-making in Ukraine and internationally.
How is the fellowship organised?
Berlin-based and Ukraine-based fellows are invited to work on their research project in cooperation with the ZOiS team and contribute to discussions with different stakeholders through the ZOiS communication formats (UNET events, ZOiS Spotlight, ZOiS Report, ZOiS podcast, ‘In conversation with’ events). One of the ZOiS researchers will provide mentorship and peer support to the fellow.
Who is eligible and what are the financial packages?
We are looking for scholars who resided in Ukraine before February 2022 and have or had an active university, research institute, think tank or NGO affiliation in Ukraine. The fellowships are awarded for a period of up to one year. Typically, the fellowship will start at the beginning of the academic or calendar year.
The senior Berlin-based fellow (12 months, approximately 2650 Euro Net, private health insurance, research and travel budget) will be based at ZOiS in Berlin or other German research institutions (considered on a case by case basis). Residential fellows must reside in Berlin (or another research institution in Germany) and are encouraged to participate in the ZOiS academic life/contribute to ZOiS research.
Eligibility:
- Ph.D., track record of research experience, previous publications
- Has or had an active university, research institute, or think tank affiliation in Ukraine
- Resided in Ukraine before February 2022
- English and Ukrainian (as a must), German is a plus
The junior Berlin-based fellow (12 months, approximately 2050 Euro Net, private health insurance, research and travel budget) will be based at ZOiS in Berlin or other German research institutions (considered on a case by case basis). Residential fellows must reside in Berlin (or another research institution in Germany) and are encouraged to participate in the ZOiS academic life/contribute to ZOiS research products.

- Has or had an active university, research institute, or think tank affiliation in Ukraine before the start of the war
- Resided in Ukraine before February 2022
- English and Ukrainian (as a must), German is a plus
The Ukraine-based fellow (12 months, 800 Euro, research and travel budget) will reside and work out of Ukraine and travel to Berlin occasionally to participate in network meetings and other events (if the circumstances permit).

- Ph.D. students are welcome to apply, so are more experienced professionals
- Has or had an active university, research institute, or think tank affiliation in Ukraine before the start of the war
- Resided in Ukraine before February 2022
- English and Ukrainian (as a must)
What kinds of support can fellows expect from the institute?
- Academic: access to partner libraries in Berlin, community guidance, peer support, support to publish an article in a peer reviewed journal, additional funding for data collection in the field (to be approved separately)
- Practical: stipend, health insurance, travel from/to Ukraine to/from Berlin, local transportation costs to visit partner institutions in Germany, visa support (ZOiS does not have the capacity to provide funding/logistical support for finding housing/childcare arrangements)
How do we choose people and projects?
The selection will be carried out in two stages:
- Review of the applications by the committee
- Zoom/in-person interview of the short-listed candidates for a detailed presentation of the research project
The selection committee will evaluate the proposals using the following criteria:
- Sound methodology and realistic plan
- Practical applicability for policy making
- Personal history, research track record and motivation
