Movies that Matter - Start-up & Impact Grants Programme

Since 2007, we supported over 250 projects in 70 different countries for a grant total of 1,5 million euros. With these projects more than million people were reached.

We offer a start-up grant for new human rights film events and an impact grant for existing events that want to increase their impact or want to add new activities to their programmes. These events can take various forms, such as human rights film festivals, LGBTI film festivals and mobile cinema projects.

Please note that we don’t finance film productions. You can find an overview of possible resources for film production here.

We welcome proposals! Deadline 6 September

Our grant programme has two selection rounds per year. The deadline for the first selection round was 17 May. The next deadline is Monday 6 September. Movies that Matter judges every project on its individual quality.

Please check our criteria & regulations for applying.

The COVID-19 pandemic – including emergency restrictions on freedom of assembly and internal movement – severely constrains the implementation of film festivals and mobile cinema screenings. Yet we hope that this unpredictability will not paralyse civil society. We encourage partners to be courageous and optimistic, creative and flexible. We welcome innovative and creative proposals for alternative ways of screening human rights cinema, followed by (interactive) discussions.

Movies that Matter recognises the crucial importance of a strong and lively civil society that advocates for civil and political rights during, but also after the pandemic. Therefore we continue to support film screenings, and encourage dialogue on the protection of human rights worldwide.
