Call for Applications, oikos Associate: “Pluralist Economics”

oikos members across the world engage on a broad range of sustainability topics — both through extracurricular activities as well as in the classroom and their research. Their agendas range from A as in alternative economic indicators to Z like zero carbon future.

Pursuing Passions

To support members in pursuing their passion for a particular topic and expanding related engagements of oikos, we launched the role of “oikos Associates” in 2016.

oikos Associates join us for six months to deepen their knowledge and network on a specific topic, to engage on this topic and to decide whether to further pursue the topic in their studies. Based within our international team in Switzerland, they explore key questions, examine answers, identify innovative players, and develop their own positions on central aspects of the topic they focus on. They enter debates, foster an exchange within oikos on the topic, and share their insights in a written 20-page report. They also organize three events to engage on the topic with the oikos community:

  1. oikos FutureLab Workshops: Sessions for 20 students at the oikos FutureLab to build capacity on the topic across oikos chapters.
  2. oikos Roundtable: a 3-hours workshop to convene practitioners and academics in order to identify key questions, discuss available answers and identify research gaps.
  3. oikos Alumni Debate: a panel discussion with oikos alumni to engage our alumni and further participants on the topic.

Pluralist Economics

We are delighted to offer a next oikos Associate role on the topic of “Pluralist Economics”. The role is scheduled to start in the third quarter of 2017 and run for six months. It will comprise a monthly gross salary of 2’000 CHF, as well as a budget to travel, build a network in the field, and organize the three events mentioned above.

Calls for more pluralism in economics have intensified significantly in recent years. The financial crisis highlighted the risks of relying on a narrow set of neoclassical economic models and amplified demands for a more diverse approach to teaching and research in the field. As a result, faculty and students across the world have built a growing momentum for change in economics curricula to broaden perspectives, expand the range of theories and methods, and align the discipline with the challenges of the 21st century.

We would like to offer a platform to an oikos Associate to engage in this development and to leverage his/her insights to expand our own activities across oikos in this field.

Applications

Applications can be sent to associates@oikos-international.org until June 30, 2017. Applications should include a motivation letter as well as your CV. If you previously engaged on the topic, e.g. by writing and/or organizing events about it, we are interested in that as well. Replies to applicants will be sent out on July 5 followed by interviews with shortlisted candidates until July 15. The final selection will take place until July 20. We aim for the Associate to join us between August and September — to be agreed upon with the Associate.
