Call for papers “Science for Robotics and Robotics for Science”News 25.07.2021
More details on information for authors as well as current and past issues of Science Robotics can be found at https://robotics.sciencemag.org/. Our submission site is located at https://cts.sciencemag.org.
Special issue on Medical Robotics
There have been notable developments in medical robotics from minimally invasive surgery, targeted therapy, prosthetics, to home assistance. However, existing clinical robotic systems generally operate in an assistive capacity. A grand challenge of medical robotics is the development of surgical and interventional robots that exhibit a high degree of autonomy.
We are looking for high-quality, original research articles that advance the field of medical robotics toward more intelligent, capable, autonomous systems. We are particularly interested in highlighting in vivo and first-use-in-human efforts, developments in brain-computer interfaces, as well as fundamental advances in micro- and nanorobotics. We are also looking for short Focus articles covering the ethical use of robots in medical applications and the use of robots against infectious diseases.
- Deadline for submission: 3 May 2021
- Expected publication of special issue: Fall 2021
Special issue on Computing Hardware for Robotics
Developments in distributed computing and telecommunications have enabled computationally intensive algorithms to be implemented in mobile robots. However, for mobile robots to be truly autonomous they must operate with low latency, be immune to communication failures, and implement complex algorithms locally on low-power computing platforms.
We are looking for high-quality, original research articles from all areas of computer and electronic engineering that advance the development of efficient computing for robotic applications. We are interested in developments that embody unconventional sensing, motor control, microcontrollers, and alternative approaches to computing into robotic systems. We are also looking for comprehensive reviews of the state of the art, and short Focus articles to provide snapshots of emerging research.
- Deadline for submission: 5 July 2021
- Expected publication of special issue: Fall/Winter 2021
Special issue on Robots in the Wild
Robots have been successfully deployed in a wide range of domains—including land, sea, air, and space—for a variety of applications such as search and rescue, oceanography, wildlife surveys, and space exploration.
We are looking for high-quality, original research articles that accelerate the deployment of robots, at all scales, in unstructured natural environments. From enabling technologies in sensing, navigation and mapping, planning and decision making, locomotion and control, to fully validated robot systems deployed in the wild. We are also looking for short Focus articles covering the innovative use of robots to tackle pressing societal challenges.
- Deadline for submission: 5 October 2021
- Expected publication of special issue: Winter 2021/Spring 2022
Special issue on Robots in Society
The widespread application of robots in society will require robots that understand the nuances of human behaviour and users that understand the limits of robot behaviour. Robots that can interpret human intent, provide social cues to their users, and adhere to social and moral norms will be better placed to collaborate with humans, gain their trust, and ultimately attain broad societal acceptance.
We are looking for high-quality, original research articles from all areas of social robotics, from advances in human-robot interaction, sensory systems, algorithms that aid sensory interpretation, to longitudinal studies involving the application of robots in social environments. We are also looking for short Focus articles covering the ethical use of robots and the application of social robots during a pandemic.
- Deadline for submission: 1 November 2021
- Expected publication of special issue: Spring 2022
