Call for Applications, Associate professor position in Biological Psychiatry at the HHU Düsseldorf


The Faculty of Medicine at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf invites applications for the temporary position of a Professor (W2) in Biological Psychiatry (with tenure-track to a permanent professorship) at the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy (Chairman: Prof. Dr. E. MeisenzahlLechner).

The position is initially restricted to a period of five years with tenure-track to a permanent professorship (W2). The Heinrich Heine University searches for applicants with an international reputation in the field of biological psychiatry, preferencially in the research field of neuroimaging. A fitting with the focus of early recognition of psychiatric diseases is a pre-condition. The candidate should represent the area of psychiatry and psychotherapy in university research, teaching and in clinical diagnostics. International research experience will be an advantage.

The candidate is expected to demonstrate successful acquisition of competitive third-party funding and an outstanding publication record in internationally renowned specialized journals. Excellent achievements in university-level teaching in the area of psychiatry or psychology and a high degree of commitment to participation in university administrative activities are expected as well. The appointee is expected to foster international research at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf and contribute to its cooperative research projects (Collaborative Research Center 1116 “Master switches in cardiac ischemia”; Collaborative Research Center 974 “Communication and Systemic Impact in Liver Damage and Regeneration”; Collaborative Research Center 1208 “Identity and dynamics of membrane systems – from molecules to cellular functions”; Düsseldorf School of Oncology (DSO); International Research Training Groups IRTG 1902 „Intra- and Interorgan Communication of the Cardiovascular System”; Research Training Group „iBrain – Interdisciplinary Graduate School for Brain Research and Translational Neuroscience“; German Consortium for translational Cancer Research (DKTK)). Cooperations with the German Diabetes Center Düsseldorf DDZ, Leibniz Research Institute for Environmental Medicine IUF and the Research Center Jülich are welcome. Commitment in teaching activities in the Medical Faculty’s University courses is required.

Comprehensive experience in the management of departmental organizational units and in personnel management is necessary. In addition, strong team and leadership skills and an active commitment to academic self-governance are essential.

If the applicant is qualified, the position is associated with clinical duties in the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy. The university will employ professors with clinical duties on a private contract basis (privatrechtliches Dienstverhältnis) according to an agreement on objectives with the State Ministry of Culture and Science of North-Rhine-Westfalia. The university or the university hospital will not offer liquidation proceeds. The clinical duties of the professorship will be settled within a separate contract, with the regional authority of the LVR (Landschaftsverband Rheinland). 

Conditions for employment are, in addition to general administrative conditions in accordance with § 36 of the North Rhine-Westphalia University Act (Gesetz über die Hochschulen des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen), an aptitude for teaching, exceptional competence in research, and additional scientific achievements.
